As California struggles with disproportionately high infant mortality rates among people of color, an uplifting partnership has emerged in Los Angeles to support Black families during critical moments before and after their babies are born.

Infant mortality rates in Los Angeles County are three times higher for Black infants than White infants, according to the latest data from the county’s department of public health. The disparity is similar at the state and national levels.

Black Mamas GlowingTM (BMG) is taking action, providing perinatal mental health resources for Black birthing families. With support from Providence, BMG serves communities throughout Los Angeles. The program incorporates peer networks, prenatal education, and other resources to reduce isolation and build community with Black pregnant women.

BMG provides holistic support for maternal and infant well-being for everyone who might be in the room during labor and delivery (e.g. spouses, partners, midwife doula, and others who might be in the room during labor and delivery). In addition to BMG staff and advocates, physicians, medical groups, federally qualified health clinics, and community advocates are part of the program.
